  • Where: Stanmore Library, 8 Stanmore Hill, Stanmore, HA7 3BQ
  • When: Tuesday 24th January 2017, 2:00 pm
  • Admission: Free - advance booking required.

A brilliant talk by Ernest Simon about his memories as a child refugee during the Second World War. Ernest experienced the growing persecution of the Jews and remembers watching a bonfire of prayer books and Torah scrolls from his bedroom window on Kristallnacht, November 9 1939. He was just eight when, at midnight on January 11 1939, he waved goodbye to his parents to flee Austria and the Nazis on the Kindertransport. After a two-day journey to Harwich and then on to Liverpool Street Station, he and thousands of other Jewish children were welcomed, but sadly many would never see their families again. Ernest Simon was one of the ‘lucky ones’, his parents and brother escaped to join him, though his father was interned on the Isle of Man for a year as an ‘enemy alien’. Growing up in Leeds he went on to work for ICI. Now living in Pinner, Ernest works closely with the Holocaust Education Trust, giving talks to ensure that we don’t forget the lessons of the past. Ages 14+.
